I got Jimmered back into Basketball

March 12, 2011

A first for BYUfootblog – we have a post about basketball. I have had a bit of an internal battle regarding the writing of this, as the site is (of course) dedicated to BYU football. But the subject of this post is bigger than “some basketball post.” He’s bigger than basketball. He’s bigger than football. He is Jimmer Fredette.

Some of my twitter followers were surprised last week when I began to ask questions regarding basketball tournaments. You see, I have never really followed college basketball – no, not even BYU. And I haven’t sat down to watch an NBA game since the 1998 Finals.

So why am I now planning my life around upcoming BYU basketball games? This is a level of relevance that I have traditionally reserved only for BYU football.

In a word: Jimmer.

When I was growing up in Iowa, my older brother (incidentally – his name is Jason Kidd) was a huge Chicago Bulls fan. Sure – everyone was a Bulls fan in the 90′s. I was captivated by this team, and of course, by Michael Jordan. Jordan was the Superstar of superstars. If he was on the team, you were going to win the championship. Not sure about that? How about a three-peat, [insert silly baseball years here] followed by another three-peat. By the 1997 and 1998 finals, the rest of my family were cheering for the Jazz rather than Jordan, but we were watching.

After that last season, and retirement (#2?) I lost interest in basketball. I began to be annoyed by how long it took to play the final minutes of a game (time outs, fouls, etc.). I started watching hockey, and soon, basketball was just “in the way” because the seasons overlap, and basketball usually usurps hockey television time.

So my sports year has typically been Football from Fall to mid-Winter, and Hockey from October to June.

Until recently.

Last March I heard that the BYU basketball team was going to the NCAA tournament, and there was talk about this star on the team, named what? Jimmer. So we tuned in, and saw this Jimmer light up a good Florida team for 37 points.  BYU of course did lose the next round to 2-seed Kansas State.  But the hook was set, and when I finally switched to DirecTV and got theMtn, I thought we might give Jimmer’s regular season a try. I watched every televised game, and found myself tuning in to Greg Wrubell on my KSL phone app for the games that weren’t televised.

So we have now watched a whole season of Jimmer. We saw the buzzer-beater against St. Mary’s, the second domination of Arizona, the Utah half-court shot, beating UNLV at the T&M to the cheers of “F-U-B-Y-U”, and beating a tough SDSU team twice. And here, we are fans of Jimmer.

For me, what sums up Jimmer is the Utah half-court shot. It was an amazing, unbelievable play. But you expected it to go in.

For most players, you think, “it would be so cool if it goes in.”

And then he turns around and walks away – just like you’re told to do when getting bullied on the playground. Just as if he had missed it. But he didn’t.

Somehow, Jimmer brought me back to basketball. After a 13 year absence, I am excited about watching hoops. Jimmer is larger than life. His teams will win games. He can beat you by driving to the hoop, draining 3′s from a mile a way, or faking you out of your shoes for a pull-up jumper. He will make plays that will make you use the “back” button on your DVR over and over. A player that even on a off night will score more points than every other player on the court. A player that can have a quiet 33 point game.  All that, and he’s not full of himself. He is now for me what Michael Jordan was to me as a child – a player worth watching.

Last night, Jimmer re-set the BYU single game points record, with 52 against New Mexico. He also took down Danny Ainge’s all-time points record at BYU. Jimmer’s comment: Danny Ainge is the best player to ever wear a BYU jersey.

Well, Jimmer, you can believe what you want. I won’t take away your humility. But for me and my house, You are the best player to ever wear a BYU jersey.

I will be watching BYU basketball games next year – I’m excited to see the new teams in the WCC.

But I’m even more excited to see where Jimmer lands in the NBA. I will be watching Him there, and His will be my new favorite team. Jimmer has been great for BYU basketball, and from what little I’ve seen of the NBA recently, I think He’ll be good for them, too.

Update: Jimmer went tenth in the NBA draft yesterday, selected by the Bucks for the Sacramento Kings. This Jimmer fan is now a Kings fan.

Independence got a little sweeter

September 1, 2010

BYU, along with its new partners, the WCC and ESPN, hosted a press conference today at Lavell Edwards stadium to officially announce football independence, as well as the alignment of other sports with the WCC.  The biggest announcements to come out of the conference:

  • BYU has an 8 year agreement with ESPN.
  • BYU has set up a 6 game series with Notre Dame that runs through 2020.
  • The WAC will provide 5 games in 2011 and 4 in 2012.
  • The agreement with the WCC is “not a stepping stone” to another [BCS] conference

BYU's New Partner

What does it all mean?

First, ESPN’s Dave Brown was present, and spoke regarding the ESPN-BYU partnership.  He talked about the great tradition at BYU, and how BYU was instrumental in “putting ESPN on the map.”  BYU played in the first live college football game televised on ESPN, where they upset then #3 Pitt.  In 1990, they upset #1 Miami, in what is still the eighth highest rated regular season game since that year.

The deal with ESPN ensures continued exposure on a great television network.  It also will continue to bring in significant amounts of money, and attract high-caliber teams from across the country to play home and home series with BYU.  Along with the ESPN contract, BYU retains the rights to air their home games on BYUtv, even on the same day it occurs as a live event on ESPN.

When BYU independence was in the rumor mill, many Mountain West schools (as well as fans and local media) aired their opinions about this awful move, and how BYU would fail.  San Diego State and Wyoming even went so far as to ask who BYU would be able to schedule, as they certainly wouldn’t be willing to play them.  Well guys, stay tuned…

BYU has that new deal with Notre Dame, who is sure to see better days ahead with new head coach Brian Kelly at the helm.  Six games is a huge commitment, and while the dates and details are still being hammered out, the Cougars have got to feel good about that relationship. In fact, recent deals with the likes of Notre Dame and Texas are just the sort of quality opponents that will make sure that BYU can continue to gain relevance in the national picture, despite not having a conference affiliation.

BYU will be playing home and home series with San Jose St, Louisiana Tech, Hawaii and New Mexico St in 2011-12, and will host Idaho in 2011.  It turns out that each had a slot to fill in the schedule that was vacated by Boise St.  Despite having a WAC-heavy schedule for those two seasons, they will be balanced out by the games against Oregon St, Texas, and Notre Dame.

With rumors that BYU is also working on deals with Clemson, Texas Tech, and others, one can only guess how many other quality teams are lining up to play the new, independent Cougars.  One thing’s for sure, BYU won’t be pining for San Diego State and Wyoming.

Declaration of Independence

August 31, 2010

Another red letter day to mark on your calendar – August 31, 2010 – Independence Day.  Around 3:30pm PST, Jay Drew tweeted, “It’s happening, folks.  [Salt Lake] Tribune has confirmed that BYU going independent in football, joining the West Coast Conference in other Sports.”  Then, twitter exploded.  Here are my thoughts on BYU’s football independence.

BYU is going independent, beginning with the 2011 season.  The biggest concern I have up front is putting together a decent schedule for next year.  We already have games scheduled with Oregon St, Texas, and Utah St.  I don’t know how many teams are looking to fill in schedules this late, but I would expect BYU to try and schedule with Notre Dame, Army, and Navy as the other independents, at least by the 2012 season.  For 2011 the WAC and MWC teams should fill out a good portion of the schedule.  ESPN may also be able to garner a deal or two for next season.  Eventually, I’d like to see: ND, Navy, Army, Air Force (complete the armed forces trio), Utah, Utah St, a few Pac-12, and a few Big-12 teams.  ESPN will be instrumental in bringing big name teams to Provo for home and home series.

A great positive to independence is that I believe this will save the Holy War.  It may never be in November again, but BYU will be free to schedule Utah year in and year out, and neither will have the stigma of playing against a team from a non-AQ conference.  They will continue to battle it out, and they will strengthen each other’s schedules.

No more mtn!  With independence, BYU is finally free from the MWC’s awful television coverage.  No more mtn channel.  No more not having the mtn channel.  It’s an ESPN affiliate or BYUtv, or both.  HOO-RAH!

BYU will need to create a partnership with a bowl game.  I could see a permanent deal with the Las Vegas Bowl, as they obviously love having BYU play in their game anyway.  They may also be able to pick up one of the Big-12 bowl games, as their 10 team league will have 8 spots to fill.  BYU travels very well, so they should be able to land a decent mid-level bowl game.

In the meantime, we still have a season of football to play.  Look for the fans from other MWC schools to be even nastier than before.  The media from other MWC cities will be slamming BYU.  Other teams will be gunning for us, just as they will for Utah.  We’re leaving them behind, and they’ll want to get in a few parting shots in.
